South valley academy new construction

Albuquerque Public Schools

South Valley Academy is a college- preparatory public charter high school serving grades nine to twelve. The school was founded in 1999 with a curriculum integrating community-based learning in a small school setting.

As general contractor, Thompson Construction led the new construction project totaling 27,737 square feet of facilities designed for service learning. The new high school campus includes office space for administration, classrooms, science labs, a media center and digital library, computer lab, greenhouse, student commons area, a performing arts space, and outdoor teaching spaces.

Wrapped around an open common area and set on approximately four acres of land, the project was designed to obtain LEED certification and, most importantly, complement the service learning curriculum the school was founded on. Thompson Construction and its subcontractors implemented a vegetation protection plan to protect the large cottonwood trees located on the project site, as well as the outdoor classroom and existing farm. The construction team also met with the school’s farming manager to ensure irrigation channels were not impacted by construction and that the farm area was left undisturbed.

The project utilized seven ABC New Mexico member subcontractors and vendors, who contributed to an overall project completion two months ahead of schedule.

Valued at just over $6 million, the South Valley Academy Administration, Classroom & Media Buildings project ultimately delivered a sustainable campus to the Albuquerque Public Schools charter school network and provided students a safe, colorful, and open environment catering to service learning and social work.
