Rio Rancho Public Schools
The Rio Rancho Middle School Wood Shop project was a complete renovation of an existing classroom block – consolidating five classrooms into an open floor plan for woodworking instruction and shop space. While sized only 3,460 square-feet, the project was loaded with specialties – including a floor and overhead dust collection system, an industrial dual-motor air compressor, new underground and overhead power to support a lineup of woodworking equipment, and penetrations into the existing structural wall to support outdoor air exchange for a 2,400 CFM-capacity DOAS system.
The project was a shining example of collaboration from concept to completion. The District funded the project to support a broader initiative for trade and technical education; the design team worked with the wood shop instructor to conceptualize the space; the design and construction teams worked in tandem to finalize construction documents; and even the parents funded the first year of wood supplies.
Designed by Greer Stafford Architects, Testudo Engineering, Inc. (MEP) and Chavez-Grieves Consulting Engineers (structural), and constructed by Thompson Construction, Inc. and 15 specialty subcontractors and installers (including 10 ABC members), the Rio Rancho Middle School Wood Shop provides a launchpad into construction exploration for 140 students.
